Frequently Asked Questions

Are Soapstone countertops considered a natural product?

Yes, Soapstone countertops are made from a natural stone that is quarried from the earth. Each piece of Soapstone is unique, with its own natural patterns and colors, contributing to the beauty and appeal of the material.

Can I choose the edge style (profile) of my Soapstone countertops?

Yes. We offer several popular options for edges that are included in your quote. If you are interested in a specific edge profile for your Soapstone countertops, just let us know!

Can I choose the exact slab of Soapstone for my project?

Yes. We have found that by letting you select the exact slabs of Soapstone for your project, you have the opportunity to add your own personal preferences and tastes to what will ultimately become your ideal Soapstone countertop space. As far as we know, Carolina Granite is the only company in the area that offers this at no additional charge.

Can I cut on my Soapstone countertops?

While Soapstone is more resistant to scratching than other natural stones, it’s advisable to use a cutting board to protect both your knives and the countertop surface. Direct cutting on Soapstone can dull knives over time, and while minor scratches can be sanded out, avoiding them is best for maintaining the countertop’s appearance.

Can I place hot items like cooking pans on my Soapstone countertops?

Yes, one of the advantages of Soapstone is its excellent heat resistance. You can safely place most hot pans or dishes directly on the surface without worrying about damage.

Can I use my own sink with my new Soapstone countertops?

Yes. You can use your own sink if you’d like. It needs to be a true undermount sink. Or you can use one of the sinks we can provide.

Can I use Soapstone for an outdoor kitchen or bar?

Yes, Soapstone is an excellent choice for outdoor kitchens or bars due to its durability and resistance to weather and temperature changes. Its non-porous nature also makes it resistant to stains and bacteria, ideal for outdoor settings.

Can Soapstone countertops be damaged after installation?

Soapstone is softer than some other natural stones, so it can scratch or chip under severe impact. However, minor scratches can often be sanded out, and regular oiling can help conceal superficial marks, maintaining the countertop’s beauty over time.

Can Soapstone countertops crack?

While Soapstone is quite durable, it can crack if subjected to significant force. However, cracks are less common in Soapstone than in many other natural stone countertops due to its unique properties.

Do I have to be home during the installation process?

We do ask that an adult over the age of 18 be at home during the installation in case we have any questions.

Do I need to seal my Soapstone countertops?

No, you do not need to seal Soapstone countertops. Its dense, non-porous nature means it’s inherently resistant to stains and bacteria, simplifying maintenance and care.

Do Soapstone countertops stain?

Due to its non-porous nature, Soapstone is highly resistant to staining. Unlike other natural stones, it doesn’t require sealing to protect against spills, making it an excellent option for both kitchens and bathrooms.

Do you have financing options available for Soapstone countertop projects?

Yes. We work with a local bank that offers easy home improvement financing for things like Soapstone countertops. If you are interested, we can connect you with our dedicated representative at the bank who will work with you.

Do you provide a warranty for your Soapstone countertops?

We guarantee our work to be completed at a professional level by trained experts. Like every other stone countertop fabricator, we can not warranty the stone itself since it is a natural product.

Do you provide Soapstone backsplash?

Yes. We can provide a standard 4” or 5” Soapstone backsplash or we can provide a full backsplash that goes all the way from the countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets.

Do you remove my existing countertops?

Yes. Our quote includes removal and disposal of your old laminate, solid surface, Soapstone, or granite countertops. If you have ceramic tile countertops there is an additional charge to remove and dispose of those.

How do I choose the right Soapstone color or pattern for my home?

Choosing the right Soapstone involves considering the overall aesthetic of your space and how the natural, muted colors of Soapstone can complement it. Soapstone typically comes in shades of gray, blue, green, or black, often with beautiful veining. Consider the lighting in your space and how it will interact with the Soapstone to bring out its natural beauty.

How do I maintain and clean my Soapstone countertops?

Cleaning Soapstone countertops is simple: use a mild soap and water for daily cleaning. Periodic application of mineral oil can enhance the natural color and veining, but this is an aesthetic choice rather than a requirement for protection.

How does Carolina Granite cut their Soapstone countertops?

Carolina Granite utilizes modern technology to ensure your Soapstone countertops are created perfectly. Our fabrication shop is also environmentally friendly as our machines are designed to “wet” cut and polish Soapstone, which produces a better cut and less dust.

How long do Soapstone countertops last?

With proper care, Soapstone countertops can last indefinitely. Their longevity is one of the many reasons homeowners choose Soapstone, as it can endure for generations with minimal maintenance.

How long will I be without a kitchen/bathroom while my Soapstone countertops are being installed?

In most cases, we complete the entire job of removing your old countertops and installing the new Soapstone countertops all in the same day.

What makes Soapstone a good choice for countertops?

Soapstone is an excellent choice for countertops due to its natural beauty, durability, and resistance to heat. It’s non-porous, meaning it doesn’t require sealing and is naturally resistant to bacteria and stains. Soapstone also has a unique softness to the touch and a rich, deep color that develops a distinctive patina over time, adding character to your space.

Why are some Soapstone countertops much more expensive than others?

The cost of Soapstone countertops can vary based on factors such as the quarry it was mined from, the size of the slab, and the depth of color or veining. Rarer varieties or those with particularly sought-after aesthetic qualities may be more expensive.

Why should I choose Soapstone over other stones for my countertops?

Choosing Soapstone means opting for a countertop material that is naturally beautiful, incredibly durable, and requires minimal maintenance. Its unique tactile quality and the patina it develops over time offer a living surface that evolves with your home.

Will my Soapstone countertops have pits on the surface?

Soapstone is a dense, non-porous stone, which generally means it has a very smooth surface without pits. However, natural variations can occur, and any small imperfections typically do not affect the countertop’s durability or aesthetic appeal.

Will my Soapstone countertops have seams?

Depending on the size and layout of your countertop area, Soapstone countertops may have seams. However, the natural variation and color of Soapstone can help to minimize the appearance of these seams.

Will Soapstone countertops possibly increase the value of my home?

Although we’re not licensed appraisers and every home is valued differently, we can say that Soapstone countertops are a desirable feature for many homebuyers and can increase the value and appeal of your home in the eyes of a prospective buyer. Their durability, beauty, and luxury appeal make them an attractive upgrade in kitchens and bathrooms, potentially offering a good return on investment. We frequently work with customers who are preparing their home to be sold.
